One of my favorite ways to do that is by blending up a smoothie that’s packed with flavor and nutrients. The good thing is that my kids also LOVE smoothies and the promise of a fruity smoothie is a surefire way to get them excited to start the day.

But some mornings I need a more grownup smoothie and an extra boost of caffeine. This coffee banana smoothie is a creamy, dreamy, caffeinated way to fuel your morning with just the right balance of sweetness and energy.

It’s quick to make, and trust me, once you’ve had it, you’ll be hooked! It gives you that caffeine boost we all love but in a smoothie form—refreshing, filling, and delicious.

It’s also my go-to on busy mornings when I need a quick breakfast and my caffeine fix in one. It’s smooth, naturally sweet, and gives you the energy boost you need to tackle your day. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or just looking for a new smoothie to add to your rotation, I think you’re going to love this one.

Coffee

You can use strong brewed coffee that has been chilled, or store bought or homemade cold brew, whichever you prefer.

If you love prepping in advance, cold brew is your best friend. You get that smooth coffee flavor without the bitterness, which pairs perfectly with the natural sweetness of bananas.

If you’re brewing your coffee fresh, make sure it is chilled before blending to keep your coffee banana smoothie cold and refreshing.

Frozen banana

Bananas add a natural sweetness that balances out the coffee’s boldness. And frozen bananas are the key to a creamy, thick texture without needing ice in your smoothie. I always keep a stash of frozen bananas on hand for smoothies!

To freeze bananas for smoothies, cut them into thick slices (this will make them easier for your blender to handle), and place them in a single layer on a parchment lined baking sheet. Place in the freezer until frozen solid and use in a smoothie or transfer to an airtight container and store in the freezer for future use.

Milk

I usually go for regular whole milk, but almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk all work well if you’re looking for a dairy-free option.

Maple syrup

Just a little bit of maple syrup adds a subtle, warm sweetness. You can adjust the amount to your taste, or skip it if your bananas are sweet enough.

I love the flavor of maple syrup in this smoothie, but honey works too. Agave syrup is another option.

Vanilla extract

Tips to Make the Best Coffee Banana Smoothie

  • If you have cold brew on hand, I recommend using it in place of brewed coffee. It’s less acidic and gives the smoothie a smooth, rich coffee flavor.
  • Be sure to use frozen bananas in this smoothie to keep it cold and frosty. Slice them to help them freeze faster and be more manageable for your blender, and freeze in a single layer on a parchment lined baking sheet. It takes me about an hour to freeze bananas this way.
  • If your bananas are super ripe, you may not need much maple syrup. Always taste the smoothie before adding more sweetener.
  • Make sure you always use chilled coffee or cold brew so there is no need to add ice! Ice cubes will water down the smoothie so it won’t be as creamy.

  • If you want to meal prep, you can also make coffee ice cubes the night before to add to your smoothie! This will make it even colder and thicker.

    Recipe Variations

    • You can add a spoonful of chia seeds, flax seeds, or hemp seeds for a nutrition boost.
    • If you want to make a protein smoothie, add some protein powder!
    • Add a tablespoon of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup for a mocha twist on this coffee banana smoothie.
    • Add a dash of cinnamon for a warm, spiced flavor that complements the coffee and banana beautifully.
    • For a nutty twist, add your favorite nut butter to the smoothie. Anything from almond butter, cashew butter to peanut butter will taste great in here!
    • If you want to make this coffee banana smoothie vegan, use any plant-based milk in place of the whole milk.

    Storage Instructions

    I recommend making just enough to finish right away – as smoothies taste best when just blended! You can store in the refrigerator for up to a day, but the texture will slightly change. Give it a good stir before drinking if you’ve stored it in the refrigerator.

    Can I make this smoothie vegan?

    Yes! Just use your favorite plant-based milk, like almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk. The rest of the ingredients are already dairy-free and vegan!

    Can I use instant coffee for this coffee banana smoothie?

    If you’re in a rush and don’t have any brewed coffee or cold brew ready, you can definitely stir up a quick cup of instant coffee with cold water to use.

    Can I add ice to the smoothie?

    If you don’t have frozen bananas on hand, you can add a handful of ice to make the smoothie cold and thick. Just note that it may dilute the flavor a little bit.
